Robben Island
Robben Island is an island located off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. It is perhaps most famous for its historical significance as a former prison, particularly during the apartheid era in South Africa. Robben Island was used as a place of banishment, imprisonment, and isolation for political prisoners, many of whom were opponents of apartheid, a system of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the South African government from 1948 to 1994. Some of the most notable prisoners included Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 of his 27 years in prison on Robben Island.
