Cape Town’s Newest Attraction: The Zeitz Mocca

Cape Town’s newest attraction is the Zeitz MOCCA. A ground-breaking new museum in an interesting area, aiming to one day be known as Cape Town’s very own Tate Modern, MoMA or Centre Pompidou. The Zeitz MOCCA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) opened at the V&A Waterfront in September 2017. With Over 6000 square metres of exhibition space across nine levels, it is the largest contemporary art museum in Africa and is not to be missed by lovers of art and culture.

It is located in the Silo district of the V&A Waterfront in what was previously purely an industrial area but is now a mixed-use space with office blocks, hotels, and restaurants that give a cool urban edge to this part of the city. The new Zeitz MOCCA is housed in an old grain silo building with heritage status and has undergone a state-of-the-art overhaul on the inside.

The must-visit museum is the dream child of the V&A Waterfront and the successful businessman Jochen Zeitz. Zeitz was previously the CEO of Puma and now spends his time working on sustainability initiatives and building his impressive contemporary African art collection.  Most of the art in the museum is on loan from his own private collection and focuses exclusively on 21st-century work from Africa and the diaspora. Renowned artists such as William Kentridge, Athi-Patra Ruga, Penny Siopis and Roger Ballen have exhibitions throughout the museum that are each incredibly different from each other but all guaranteed to touch your soul and transport you to another world. If you are perhaps unaware of who these artists are, this is an excellent opportunity to experience their phenomenal work and discover even more amazing African contemporary artists.

This is a must-see attraction for anyone who is interested in art and architecture, and especially those who want to be exposed to some of the best contemporary African art in the world. One way to really get to know a country and its people is through the way it chooses to express itself and the art that it creates to either celebrate or convey important messages. The Zeitz Mocca is easily accessible as it is part of the Africa’s most visited tourist attraction the V&A Waterfront, and is open every day except Tuesday. On Wednesday African passport holders get free admission.
